The Tack Barn is our beautiful and sustainable holiday cottage in East Sussex - close to Lewes, the South Downs National Park, Glyndebourne Opera House, Charleston Farmhouse, many wonderful gardens and the iconic cliffs of the Seven Sisters . It is tucked in its own woodland overlooking the pond and is kitted out with local products and art, making it a stylish and creative hideaway and a very special place to stay.
We are evangelical about our patch of East Sussex - we both grew up in the area and know it as a county of exceptional landscapes, art, music, gardens, food and wine - and are surprised that it is often overlooked as a destination and are trying our best to change that. There are some wonderful artists and makers working in and around Lewes, some even work in the studios here at Upper Lodge, so it has always seemed like a good idea to use some of our favourite products and art throughout the Barn. We also provide a list of the makers should our guests wish to visit and buy some of their work while they are staying here - one guest this year, inspired by our mugs in the Barn, went on to commission a dinner service from the same local potter.
Promoting localism has been our aim this year. There is a strong local food and drink culture and lively independent retail and art scene in our neighboring county-town of Lewes and the surrounding countryside. We have been establishing personal connections with the open studio trails, food and drink festivals, vineyard associations and many art destinations, and finding new ways to promote these to our guests.
