Saffron Grange is one of Essex’s best kept secrets. A family-run vineyard nestled on the gentle sloping hills just outside of Saffron Walden, it produces delicious, premium quality English Sparkling Wines. Since launching their first vintages in 2019 it has been quietly racking up the awards, achieving Silver in the Decanter World Wine Awards for its delicious 2016 Classic Cuvée.
It is a little-known fact that the Saffron Region sits on the same chalk seam that runs all the way from Northern France’s renowned wine regions, up through Sussex and into Essex.
All Saffron Grange’s sparkling wines are produced using what is called ‘the traditional method’ – also popularly known as the ‘Champagne method’. This method of winemaking creates wines with a greater complexity of flavours and fine, persistent bubbles. The vineyard has three distinctly impressive sparkling wines - the Classic Cuvée, a sparkling Rosé and Seyval Blanc Reserve.
Last year’s Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2018, crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, recently received a glowing review from renowned wine critic Tamlyn Currin, who placed it top of the sparkling wine class in her ‘Rosés for 2020’ article on www.JancisRobinson.com, describing it as:
“Absolutely delightful. It’s so seldom that I just fall head over heels for a sparkling wine on the sole basis that it is simply delicious. No genuflecting to Krug or Billecart, no wannabe-Cristal winemaking attempts. Just a trugful of fresh-picked raspberries, the chalk and sherbet of alpine strawberries, a gauzy, lacy network of perfectly formed bubbles. As thirst-quenching as red-apple sorbet. And absolutely brilliant with food. One of the most food-friendly English sparkling wines I’ve ever had. I could drink this all summer!”
We have just launched the latest 2019 Sparkling Rosé and are equally as excited for everyone to taste it.
