Along with rugged coastlines, glorious gardens and historic houses, Essex also offers some of the finest food in the whole of the country. Lucy who runs New Hall vineyard in Essex, tells us of some of her top spots around the county…
New Hall is one of the oldest family-run vineyards in the UK, established in 1969, so we are now celebrating our 50th anniversary. Over 14 styles of wine are produced in the winery as well as award-winning wine for other regional growers. New Hall, along with other renowned vineyards in the Crouch Valley, enjoys a unique microclimate aided by a combination of low rainfall, a temperate growing season and ideal growing degree days tempered by the neighbouring River Crouch and Blackwater. We are proud to be part of the continued popularity of English Wines. Not only does the county of Essex home our wonderful winery, it also boasts many gourmet and garden treasures, here are some of my favourites…
A charming and delightful tearoom serving the very best lunches and daily specials, all produced from the finest local ingredients. Their cream teas are a thing to behold; light, fluffy homemade scones are served with real clotted cream and the most delicious Wilkin jams, produced from excellent fruit grown at Tiptree HQ. Bite into your treats while soaking in the views of the Basin and Lock. With the enthusiastic and hospitable energy that bursts from this gem, you’ll be sure to return for more!
RHS Garden Hyde Hall is simply a true treasure, a slice of serenity in the Essex countryside, this site boasts spectacular panoramic views. you can lose yourself for a whole day exploring the various gardens, ponds and imaginative beds. There are many events here throughout the year so keep your eyes peeled as they are always original and a fantastic day our for all the family. The shop, café and restaurant are also well worth a visit.
Smokehouse, Maldon
The Maldon Smokehouse is a true hidden gem, where the main focus is solely on serving the very best fresh seafood in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Blackwater. The team are seriously passionate about high quality seafood and their platters are legendary. Take your own bottle of chilled white wine on a sunny day and you will have a marvellous lunchtime treat. They even have a Games Room for private events!
Taprooms, Maldon
The Taprooms in Maldon may be small but it is mighty! There is a huge selection of locally produced real ales, all made in small batches with love, care and skill in the nearby brewery. The Taproom is a very cool and quirky place to visit with friends for snacks, great ale, bar games and to relax in a cosy corner. Also a great bar to visit before starting your night off in Maldon, or to finish off with a nightcap.
